Here’s how the conversation usually goes when the kids get off the school bus:
Me: “Hi! How was your day?”
Kids: “Fine. We’re hungry.”
Me: “Well, nice to see you, too. How was your day?”
Kids: “Fine. What’s for snack?”
You get the idea. My kids are 10 and 8, and they are always hungry. School started here this week (!!) so I need to stock up on after-school snacks. So, for the Friday Five: five back to school snack ideas that are both healthy and yummy!
1. Make-Your-Own Wraps
These make-your-own wraps may be my kids’ favorite snack, because they can choose the fillings they want. They take soft tortillas or pitas and fill them with their choice of goodies.
Fillings can include ham, turkey, cheese, avocado, hummus, salsa, olives, and pickles. The combinations are endless! My daughter doesn’t really eat meat, so she usually goes for cheese, salsa, and olives. My son, the carnivore, usually chooses ham or turkey pepperoni, hummus, olives, and maybe avocado. Healthy and fun, because they get to make it themselves.
2. Veggies and Dip
Veggies and some sort of dip, like hummus or low-fat ranch dip, is a great, healthy, easy snack.
Just cut up some crunchy veggies – they hold the dip better- and make or buy some hummus, ranch dip, or guacamole. Doesn’t get much easier! Plus, you can use the veggies that are in season – yum!
3. Fruit and Cheese
I think my daughter would eat fruit and cheese for every meal.
So an easy and healthy snack for her is her fruit of choice and a cheese stick. The best part? She can make it herself – just grab some fruit, wash it, and pick the cheese of her choice. I keep these cheese sticks in the snack drawer of our fridge.
4. Peaches and Granola
While my daughter loves pretty much all fruit, peaches are her favorite.
In the summer, when the peaches are at their best, cutting up a peach and adding some granola is a perfect snack. Don’t have any granola? Use any crunchy cereal, or crumble up a granola bar on top! And any fruit will work here – blueberries, strawberries, apples are all good.
5. “Help Yourself” Fruit
This really is the easiest snack idea in the world: I just keep a bowl or tray of fruit on the table or counter where the littles can find it, and they can help themselves to fruit any time! Bonus points for the kids if they add a dollup of yogurt or almond butter for a bit of protein!
